FAQS about appraisalsHere are some of the questions we get about appraisals— What is tangible personal property?Tangible personal property includes your furniture, antiques,
china and silver, jewelry, fine art, vehicles, computers, appliances and
other household items. It does not include your home or any land you own. How can the same property have different values?Appraisals serve many purposes, therefore personal property
is evaluated in different ways. For example, if you own antiques and plan
to sell them, you need a fair market value appraisal—prices they
would likely sell for on the open market to a willing buyer. If you are
insuring them against loss, "present worth" value would be set
at replacement cost so that you would receive compensation based on the
price of an equivalent item of similar appearance, quality, condition,
age, authorship and utility. What should I look for in an appraiser?Unfortunately, there are no regulations that prevent unqualified
"experts" from conducting appraisals. That's why you should
be sure your appraiser is an accredited member of a recognized appraisal
association such as the International
Society of Appraisers (ISA). All ISA members must adhere to a strict
code of ethics and conduct. Continuing education and regular testing are
requirements for accreditation. Roger Howard has been an accredited member
of ISA since 1998. If you have any additional questions about appraisals, call 713-869-5561 or send us your inquiry. |
